The science: this piece maps the dynamic immune choreography that unfolds from day zero to day six after skeletal muscle injury. In animal models, mostly mice, a wound sets off a precisely timed sequence of immune activity. Different cell types arrive, act and hand over to the next in a coordinated wave that clears damage and rebuilds the muscle. The colourful niches are drawn from what advanced single cell technologies reveal: CyTOF (mass cytometry) and Imaging Mass Cytometry (IMC) let researchers see dozens of markers at once and place each cell population in space and time.
