The Healing Cascade

Date: 2026-07-09

This watercolour illustration captures how muscle heals after injury. At the base, an injured limb reveals its exposed muscle and the wound at its centre; from that wound rises a cascade of colourful cells, drifting upward on fine threads like seeds carried on the wind. The scattered cells represent the orchestrated response of wound healing - the immune cells that clear the damage, the satellite and stem cells that rebuild muscle fibres, and the new vessels and connective tissue that knit the tissue back together. What looks like a burst of blossoms is in fact regeneration in motion: an ordered biological cascade in which countless cells cooperate to repair and renew. The piece honours the body's remarkable capacity to mend itself, turning the science of tissue repair into something luminous and alive.
